Scruggs captures first Tour victory at Stonebridge Golf Club

The weather played a big factor at this event as wet course conditions and a slight weather delay made the course play a little longer and tougher than normal. Trey Scruggs of Shreveport, La. came out on top with the low round of the day shooting 75 to take top honors in the Championship flight and claiming his first tour win of the season. Trey has been working on his putting over the last few weeks and it turns out it was the right decision. There’s a lesson to be learned for most of us here, the short game is where the scoring happens and putting deserves as much focus as the full swing. In the Hogan flight, straight shooting, Dale Johnson of Lufkin, Tx takes another win shooting 80 to capture first place honors. Randy Adcock of Vidor, Tx captures top honors in the Jones flight shooting 84 to take top honors and a little hardware for his trophy case.

The Course: The Golf Club of Stonebridge in Bossier City, La. The course was playing longer than normal due to wet conditions. Greens were about 10 on the stimp meter.

The Weather: A mix of sunshine, clouds and rain.

The Tournament:

Championship Flight: Top 3: Trey Scruggs (75), Don Bogue (76), Cecil Jones (76 )(Guest), Mike Morton (79), Bobby Annison (84)

Trey Scruggs of Shreveport, La. takes home top honors with a 3 over par round of 75. Don Bogue, of Lufkin, Tx. captures second place honors with a (76). One of our guests soon to turn member, Cecil Jones scored well enough to tie for second place with his steady play. Mike Morton of Broussard, La shoots (79) to capture fourth place and rounding out the top 5 is Bobby Annison (Team Championship Qualifier) of Denham Springs, La with an (84).

Hogan Flight: Top 3: Dale Johnson (80), Larry Meadows (81) Don Moore (82), Derek Hammonds (82), Andy Vargo (83).

The scores were close once again in the Hogan flight. Dale Johnson of Lufkin, Tx. fired (80) to pull off the win and capture first place honors. Larry Meadows of Hallsville, Tx(81) captures 2nd place honors, narrowly missing his bid for the win. Larry had an amazing 3 birdies on the front and just 30 putts overall, but a double and 2 - triple bogeys cost him the win on this day. Derek Hammonds of Queen City, Tx. and Don Moore (Team Championship Qualifier) of Texarkana, Tx. battled it out on the scorecard to decide third place honors. Don came out on top with a back nine score of 42 vs Derek’s 43. In review of the cards this came down to putting once again. With a little focus on putting both of these players would have been in the 70’s. The putting stats made a huge difference in the results in this flight. 1st place had 32, 2nd 30 putts, 3rd place had 35 putts and 4th place had 37 putts with very similar GIR stats. Rounding out the top 5 is Andy Vargo of Bossier City, La (83).

J.K. Miller of Lumberton, Tx. shoots the low round of the day to take top honors in the Championship flight.

The Course: Koasati Pines, Kinder, La. The course was in good condition with smooth greens rolling at a 9.5 -10 on the stimp.

The Weather: A mix of sunshine and clouds . The winds were constant, S 2-4 mph.

Championship Flight: Top 5: J.K. Miller (70), Robert Corbello (72), John Jeffrey (74), John Oates (75), Collier Nolte (75)

J.K. Miller of Lumberton, Tx brought the heat today by firing a 2 under par (70) to bring home top honors. J.K. and Robert Corbello battled it out all day and if you glanced at the scorecards you would have thought Corbello had put it to ol’ J.K. Miller. Corbello came out of the gate strong making birdies on 1, 6, 10, 13, and 18 but it was J.K.’s steady play and 3 birdies on 4, 17 and 18 that closed the deal. J.K. may have officially retired the knickers after this event. If you haven’t heard, J.K. has shot some of his best scores when he chooses to wear something other than knickers. We’ll see if J.K. is superstitious from here on out. Taking third place honors with a steady 74, was John Jeffrey of Groves, Tx. with birdies on 3,5 and 11. It looked like John Jeffrey was putting up a good fight of his own as he and John Oates both caught fire and went on a birdie spree. Oates like Corbello looked to be putting it to the field. With all the birdies these two were knocking off, you would have thought it was hunting season. Oates birdied 6, 11, 14, 16 and 18. The birdie spree on the back was just the ticket as we had a cluster of scores at 75. We had to go to the scorecard to decide 4th and 5th place as Oates, Nolte, Pizzi and Morton all shot 75. It was Oates that finished the strongest on the back capturing 4th, followed by Collier Nolte of Sour Lake, Tx with 3 birdies of his own on the back, followed by Mike Morton of Broussard, La with a solid round, and then Steven Pizzi of Houston, Tx.

Hogan Flight: Top 5: Kevin Turner (77), Michael Garrett (81), Gil Coppersmith (83), Mark Kirby (84), Dale Johnson (86)

In the Hogan flight, Kevin Turner of Vidor, Tx captures first place honors and takes home the hardware with a 77, recording birdies on 1, 3 and 18. Michael Garrett of Greenwood, La captures second place with an 81, recording birdies on 3 and 17. Gil Coppersmith of Houston, Tx made the trip from Houston and continues to show his competitive talent by taking third place honors with an 83 and recording a birdie on 2. Mark Kirby of Bridge City, Tx captures 4th place with an 84, recording birdies on 1 and 16. Rounding out the top 5 is Dale Johnson of Lufkin, Tx.

Sarazen Flight: Top 5: David Voulgaris (77), Jeff Zemencsik (81), Paul Whitehead (81), Walter White (81), John Blount (82)

David Voulgaris of Wharton, Tx captures first place honors firing a 77 and outdistancing his nearest competitor by 4 shots . We had to go to the scorecards to settle second place in this flight and when the dust settled it was Jeff Zemencsik (Houston Tour Director)from Magnolia, Tx with (81,38) to capture 2nd place honors. Paul Whitehead of Wildwood, Tx. captures 3rd place with an (81, 41). Walter White of West Monroe, La. finishes 4th with an (81, 43) and rounding out the top 5 is John Blount of Denham Springs, La.

Jones Flight: Top 5: Larry Nelson (79), Leonard Peterson (81), Sidney Harper (83), Mike Murphy (85), Roy Allen (86)

The competition was extremely strong in the Jones flight with several contenders vying for first place honors. Larry Nelson of Highland, In. made the trip down from the Chicago tour to visit friends and family. While in the Bayou State, Larry showed us how much improvement he has been making in his game. Larry held off the rest of the field by shooting his best round on tour with a 79. One which will probably earn him a well deserved promotion. Second place honors go to Leonard Peterson of Lufkin, Tx with and 81. Leonard is coming off a recently well deserved promotion from the Snead Sr. flight this week and his excellent play shows just how much improvement he has made this year. The boys back at the local club better watch out…. Sidney Harper of Mt Pleasant, Tx, in his second competitive round of the season, fired a very respectable 83 taking 3rd place honors. Mike Murphy of Corrigan, Tx. who also earned a promotion to the Jones flight, captures 4th place honors with an 85. Rounding out the top 5 is Roy Allen of Lufkin, Tx with an 86.
